Are Surf Reports Accurate? What Forecasts Get Right and Wrong
Surf forecasts are quite accurate about swell — size, period, direction, and timing — especially inside two or three days. They are much less accurate about the things that actually decide whether your session is good: local wind, how a specific sandbar is breaking, and how a spot handles the tide. So the honest answer is that a forecast is usually right about the ocean and often wrong about your surf.
What forecasts get right
Swell is physics on a large scale, and models handle it well. A storm generates energy, that energy crosses open ocean at a predictable speed, and long-period swell in particular announces itself clearly. Within a couple of days, a forecast will usually be close on:
- Whether a swell is coming at all.
- Roughly how big it will be at the buoy.
- Its period and direction.
- When it will fill in and when it will fade.
- The tide — this is not a forecast at all but an astronomical calculation, and it is essentially exact.
What forecasts get wrong
Almost everything local. The forecast describes swell approaching a coastline; you surf one specific break, and the last stretch between the two is where predictions fall apart.
Wind
Wind is the single biggest source of error, and also the thing most likely to ruin a session. Coastal wind is driven by local temperature differences that shift hour to hour, and a model working on a coarse grid cannot resolve one beach's morning offshore or the sea breeze that comes up at ten. A forecast can be right about a clean three-foot swell and completely wrong that it's surfable.
How the spot is breaking
No forecast knows the shape of your sandbar. Beach breaks reconfigure after every serious swell, so identical numbers can produce a peeling A-frame in April and a closeout in May. Reefs and points are more stable, but even they have moods a model doesn't hold.
Crowd
Nothing in a forecast accounts for the fact that everyone else read the same forecast. A well-advertised swell on a Saturday can be technically excellent and practically unsurfable.
How accuracy decays with time
Treat the forecast horizon roughly like this:
- Today: reliable on swell, still shaky on wind. Best paired with a live report.
- 1–3 days out: good. This is the window for planning a session.
- 4–7 days out: directionally useful. Expect the size to move and the wind to be a guess.
- 8+ days out: a signal that something may be coming, not a plan. Sizes at this range routinely halve or double.
A useful habit is to watch how a forecast changes rather than reading it once. A swell that holds steady across several updates is far more trustworthy than one that appeared this morning.
So how do you actually know?
You close the gap with observation. A beach cam helps, if your spot has one and the angle is honest — cams flatten waves and hide wind texture. Better still is someone who is already out there and can tell you the thing no model and no camera reliably shows: whether it's actually worth it.

Trust the forecast on swell and tide. Distrust it on wind and on how your spot will break. And never let a forecast alone be the reason you drive an hour — confirm with something happening in real time.
