What Is Swell Period? The Most Important Number in a Surf Report
Swell period is the time in seconds between two passing waves, and it is the single best predictor of whether the surf will be any good. A longer period means a more powerful, better-organized swell. If you only check one number besides wave height, check this one — a 3 ft swell at 16 seconds will almost always beat a 5 ft swell at 7 seconds.
What is swell period, exactly?
Buoys measure how long it takes for successive wave crests to pass a fixed point. That interval is the period, written in a report as something like “3ft @ 14s”. It sounds like a technical footnote. It isn't — it's telling you how much energy is stored in the wave and how far that energy traveled to reach you.
The physics behind it is simple enough to be useful: longer-period waves carry energy much deeper below the surface. A short-period wave is barely more than surface texture. A long-period wave is a column of moving energy that reaches down and feels the seafloor from much further out, which is why it stands up and breaks with real force.
What do the numbers actually mean?
Here's the practical translation of the ranges you'll see on any report:
- 6–9 seconds — local wind swell. Generated by nearby wind, weak and disorganized. Waves come in fast, close out easily, and lack push. Often still fun when small, and genuinely good for learning.
- 10–13 seconds — moderate groundswell. Organized, rideable, with proper shape. This is the everyday good-surf range at most beaches.
- 14–17 seconds — solid groundswell that traveled a long way. Powerful, well-spaced sets with real drive. Spots that need size start working.
- 18+ seconds — long-distance groundswell, often from a storm thousands of miles away. Very powerful and deceptively big for the reported height. Sets can be far apart with long lulls between them.
The key insight beginners miss: the same reported height means completely different things at different periods. Two feet at 18 seconds can be an overhead wave face. Two feet at 7 seconds is ankle-slapping chop.
Why does long period make waves bigger than reported?
Because reported height is measured in open water, before the wave interacts with the seafloor. When a long-period swell reaches shallow water, all that deep energy gets compressed upward — the wave slows down and stands up dramatically. This is called shoaling, and it's why a long-period forecast routinely produces wave faces much taller than the buoy number.
It's also why long-period swells are the ones that catch people out. If the report says 4 ft at 17 seconds, do not expect 4 ft waves. Expect something considerably bigger and heavier than the number suggests.
Groundswell vs wind swell
This is really the same distinction in different words. Wind swell is generated by local wind close to shore — short period, messy, short-lived. Groundswell was generated by a distant storm and has traveled far enough for the waves to sort themselves into clean, evenly spaced lines. Distance is what does the organizing, and period is how you measure that distance from your couch.
Long-period groundswell also wraps. It refracts around headlands and into bays that shorter swell can't reach, which is why a big long-period event switches on spots that are flat most of the year.
Does a higher period always mean better surf?
No — and this is where a lot of people over-correct. Period tells you about the swell's power and organization, not about everything else. A 16-second swell arriving on a 20-knot onshore wind is still a mess, because wind direction decides the surface quality regardless of how good the swell underneath is.
Long period can also be too much of a good thing for a given spot. Some beach breaks simply close out when the swell gets too powerful, and some reefs get unmanageable. And very long-period swells come with long lulls — you can sit through five flat minutes between sets. How to use period in practice
- Read the period before the height. It sets the context for everything else.
- Under 10 seconds, expect weak and choppy — fine for learning, rarely exciting.
- Over 14 seconds, expect waves noticeably bigger and heavier than the reported height.
- Check the wind separately. Great period plus onshore wind is still a bad day.
- Remember spots have limits — more power isn't better past a point.
